I found out about the workshop via the Charleston Outdoor Painters Group... lets see... maybe 12 active painters... and let's count 1 watercolor painter (ME)... that's it, to advertise a watercolor workshop. No other mention of this seminar, in the other art groups or magazines in the city. Their website is a PITA, they don't answer email, or the phone, forget leaving a message they won't call you back.... and surprise surprise, they didn't get enough people to hold the workshop...ARGG. I sometimes wonder how some people stay in business... perhaps a rich Daddy left them Buckets of money... because they haven't got a clue...
Ok I'm done...

A first for me today... I used photoshop to 'paint' the yellow hat. I picked up the yellow from the 'sun' and dropped it into the hat... it worked pretty good.... course I still need to paint the hat in real life...LOL

Wave
Watercolor based on lesson in Bob Davies DVD "Watercolor Secrets".. on 9x12 140lbs cold pressed Arches Block. I used some of my Daniel Smith Watercolors... Undersea Green, and Cobalt Teal, to get the green sunlit wave, and used White Gouache for the first time to get the foamy wave crest... all in all I'm quite pleased with how this turned out.

We've been taking it easy today, it isn't as hot as yesterday, Ron and I took the scooters out for a spin, a bit of shopping and lunch at Chili's... I'm working on another painting too this weekend.

I'm registered for a workshop next month with Russell Jewell (he was featured in the last issue of Watercolor Artist magazine)... I did not want to lug my heavy French box in the July heat... now I have a cool, light weight compact easel... I think I'm really going to like it.

We have an owl in the neighborhood, I haven't actually seen him, I only hear him... in the early evening he starts 'whoo-ing'... I get to listen to him when I grill out for dinner.

Waterfalls
Watercolor on 9x12 Rough 140 lbs Cold Pressed paper... this is from Bob Daivies "Watercolor Secrets" DVD lessons on water.
This one took me forever, the water which was done last, actually was pretty easy to do and I think turned out ok.

I can't remember a June this wet in a long long time. It rains almost every day (or night) the farmers are LOVING it... they say the peach crop in South Carolina is better this year than it's been in 10 years... even though I love peaches, I'm a little weary of wet miserable dogs....and not being able to ride my scooter much.

I've been looking for an out of print book, that the book sellers want WAY too much money for... so today, I checked the county library... and they had the book I wanted, plus a few others I'd been thinking of getting. I was amazed that they had so many art books there... I'll be going back for sure.

I like that these markers don't bleed, and that they are 'open stock' so I can buy just the colors I want and aren't forced to buy a 'set'...but I don't like the way they fill in... they leave overlap lines...??? How do illustrators deal with this? Is there a trick to it that I haven't learned yet?
ZigColorChart
My Zig Calligraphy pens came in the mail today.. so I did a color chart of the colors I ordered.

I've been thinking a lot about painting and drawing lately... I really like cartoon/illustrations and find myself thinking about how I'd illustrate a children's fable... on the other hand I find myself drawn to loose style watercolor paintings like Ron Rankin, Tony Van Hasselt, Mel Stabin and Anne Watkins.. much as I admire their work, I can't seem to let go and do a painting like that... so my goal for tomorrow is to let it happen, I'm only going to take BIG brushes and 7 colors... I'm going to allow myself to really do a HORRIBLE painting... and not care.

Storms headed our way tonight too... poor Gracie... she hates storms and is cowering in her crate now... so we know it's coming soon. I like a good thunderstorm... maybe it'll cool things off.

I did not draw the hawk from life, but I did stand and watch him for a long time... big powerful bird riding the hot air currents... and looking like he was enjoying himself very much. Lots to do tonight... so I better get to it.

Drew the Lily while I sat on the porch, watching the chicken cook on the grill... it's a really transparent peach color.. I got close but not exactly the right color. Now I'm going to go play for a bit with a new paint brush I bought.. I've got a half done painting on my table too... but playing suits my mood tonight.

"S" is for Swan and Strawberry..
Swans are so beautiful and graceful, but in my experience with them mean, territorial and aggressive birds.
Strawberries... oh how I love them, used to anyway, they are now the forbidden fruit, as I had a serious allergic reaction to them and can no longer eat them ... I must admit I still miss them very much.
