Sullivan's Island Light

Finally got around to finishing these two paintings, this one is the paper version.  It's 300 lbs Fabriano paper size 7 x 11. Overall I like it, there are some things I would change if I did it again.

Where did June go?  Zip.. and it's gone..  finally a bit of rain fell in my yard, from the afternoon thunderstorms that have been rolling in around 3pm every day now.
I got very hot at the rally today and had to leave early... it was a lot of fun and lots of friends were there to support our favorite Congressman Tim Scott.

Thunderstorms all around us, lightening and rain visible, but not a drop fell in my yard. Akkk.. We had to make a run to the store for dog food and Milk Bones... since Red Lobster was right next door, we popped in and had some Steak and Shrimp for dinner...(Lobster is too expensive LOL)

This page was inspired by Barbara Weeks, I spent an enjoyable afternoon admiring her journal pages on her blog : barbaraweeks.blogspot.com/  I love her sketches, but I also love the way she lays out her pages, her line work on sketches that she doesn't paint at all... the fact that she's a hockey fan is something we have in common.  I've only been to her town Chicago once, but I loved the city, the food, and the people.. l found them very friendly to someone with a Southern drawl :-)  So if you have an afternoon and want to see some really nice journal pages... give Barbara's blog a look see.

Got a dirty clothes hamper/laundry sorter... just gotta get the spousal unit to put his undies and socks in the right bin... I think I'm going to like it, it's a rolling cart that can roll to the laundry room for washing... even has a top that can serve as a small ironing board. Simple things make me happy, my new laundry system made me happy today.

Shirley (kentucky_doodler) and I have been talking about color mixes, so after a long day traveling to Columbia SC for a board meeting, a bit of shopping in the big city and a long drive home... mixing some color seemed a good way to take it easy. The top left mix was way too wet, so I redid that swatch... I really like the green Roz's favorite PB60 Blue gives mixed with Hansa Yellow. All of the above are Daniel Smith Paints and for color geeks I've listed the pigment numbers too.

We've had scattered showers today, rained at the house but not at the office... the good news is it has lowered the temperatures a lot... practically a COLD spell.

We finally got a bit of rain... thunderstorms rolled thru and at least wet the ground. I did a little more work on my paintings tonight... gotta scan them in a bit.

This song has been banging around in my head for a couple of days, so today I looked up the lyrics and had to use them in my journal, now maybe it'll stop banging around.

Got some Fabriano Paper packs and a new size 14 round brush. I started my painting on a piece of paper, because I'm so unhappy with the way it has turned out.

Watercolor Ground Test

Well this is what the 2nd wash looks like. The colors are no longer washed out, Garish and too intense now, and I believe the ground lifted off the canvas due to too much water. To see the look I was going for see this same scene in July of last year www.flickr.com/photos/captelaine/4835802440/in/set-721576...
I have added a really large size of this so you can see how ugly it is up close and personal.

I bought some canvas panels 8x10 at Michaels and put one coat of Watercolor ground on them. I tried last night to paint a wet-n-wet sunrise sky, so yellows, crimson and cobalt blue... it looked pretty good wet.. and I do know that watercolor dries lighter... but this dried so light you could barely tell there was color at all... so I applied another coat of the same colors... we'll see what it looks like once it's dry but I do believe I should have used more than one coat of the ground... because it isn't working like I thought it would.

If you see an old woman with grey hair in pony tails, and hot pink shorts, flip flops and 60's psychedelic tie dyed t-shirt in the 'people of Wal*Mart emails that go around from time to time... that'd be ME at Wally World today. Someone had to take my picture, because I got a lot of double takes LOL

I love my Lamy pen, but I use it mostly for writing, and use Microns in my journal... but in honor of my new pencil, which I drew with the Lamy pen, I drew the Lamy pen with the pencil, then inked it in, today's page is all Lamy ink... added the yellow hours later, but it still ran.

So much I have to learn about politics, like the fact that the party must pay for the primary elections. In the past the party combined precincts used volunteer poll workers, with paper ballots.  New law requires us to rent the states electronic voting machines and pay certified poll workers... which will cost the party $2 million dollars that we don't have.... the Democrats won't have a primary, so they don't have to pay for anything... even though the Democrats are allowed to vote in our primary.

Took a break from mounds of laundry to visit Ron's brother this afternoon. Got 6 bags of Miracle Grown Garden Soil to replace the cow manure, that I believe is killing my flowers... a friend at the picnic yesterday bought some of the same manure and is having the same issues in her garden... so it isn't just me with this problem.

Breakfast at Kelly's BBQ, where state Senator Chip Campsen talked about the NLRB suit against Boeing, that off to a picnic at Wannamaker park, we were at some tables near this man made hill... the kids in the park spent the afternoon running up the hill and rolling down it... they were having a blast and no electronics were involved at all.

I bought some 'composted cow manure' for my flower beds this year, and I do believe that it wasn't composted well enough, so some sort of fungus has attacked my flowers and stunted their growth... and they've stopped producing flowers, the same flowers in my flower boxes planted in potting soil are thriving... I may have to dig up my flowers, and dig up the bad dirt and replace it and replant... I can't think of what else to do about it... I'm really bummed about my flowers not blooming.

I have to draw my Dogbert doll at least once a year... so here he is.  For those wanting to know, I LOVE the bed, added bonus last night anyway no snoring :-)  The pillow top arrived tonight, I think that will make it even better.

We got our new mattress today, didn't get our pillow top yet, it is coming from Missouri, the bed was made just up the road in Columbia SC... I like it already and so do the dogs... I feel good about buying something made in the USA... not many things are these days.  I'll let you know tomorrow how this new bed is to sleep on.

I can't believe I forgot my anniversary... and I can't believe I woke up in the middle of the night and realized I'd forgotten... So 4 years and 2 days... headed toward that goal of 5 years now...

It was brutally hot today.... so hot even the dogs didn't want to go outside.... we're in for a long hot summer. if it is this hot in June.

Book Thirteen ... Luck 13 Summer of 2011

Finally did a Title page for this journal... a watermelon... been too dry around here for local melons yet... should have some by July 4th though... next to burgers on the grill and flip flops... watermelon means Summer to me.

Daniel Smith box arrived today, with some new colors and a tub of his new Watercolor Ground. I added 4 new colors to my paint box ( I got a new Cobalt Violet but didn't add to the box because I want to use up the Ultramarine Violet first)... I added a new Yellow (Cobalt Yellow top left) a new red Carmine (bottom left, this is a color that Charles Reid loves so I figured I'd give it a try), a new blue (for me) Cerulean Blue middle row, and a new earth color... Daniel Smith's Raw Sienna which is a single pigment instead of a multiple pigment like Windsor Newton's Raw Sienna). These are the colors in my big travel palette. My tiny bijou box is staying the same for now...

I was surprised at the number of people cruising the mall tonight... we so rarely go to the mall I didn't realize so many people were there during the week... we usually do all our shopping on the weekends.

Last watercolor workshop class tonight... I'm going to miss our Wednesday night get togethers... we'll go again next Fall. Still mulling over what to do for a title page on this journal... so I guess that'll come later. I got my 10 - Lesson Charles Reid painting course DVD's today, listened to a little of the first one, I really like his painting style and his teaching style. I'd LOVE to go to a workshop with him in person some day.
