How many people know that many Dalmatians are deaf? If my memory serves - which can be a dicey thing anymore - they were used in the fire departments, riding on the trucks, because the loud sirens didn't bother them because they didn't hear well. I don't think I made that up.
Actually, not as many as people might think. They are born deaf, or they aren't deaf at all. Any predominately white dog has the same issue... so it's not just Dalmatian's. I owned the number 1 Dalmatian in obedience for 4 years back in the early 1970's... and am still a huge fan of the breed. Read about my dog Dominique's Rusty Nail UD in Esme Treen's book on Dalamatians.
