It all started with an insult. During Andrew Jackson’s 1828 presidential campaign, his political opponents labeled him a “jackass.” Stubborn as he was, Jackson co-opted the insult and began putting a donkey on his election posters. Much later in 1874 the elephant was introduced in a cartoon labeled as 'Republican Vote'... from that point on political cartoonists have used the Donkey and the Elephant to depict the two major political parties in the USA. Do political parties in other countries have mascots? I've tried some google searches but haven't found anything to answer that question yet.
Sea Island meeting tonight, speakers were 2 ladies running for Charleston County school board. Rained all day today, which we needed... supposed to rain again tomorrow.
Rained all day today on and off. Ron had a really tough time of it this morning, had to take him to the Dr's office, they gave him a shot and some pain meds and sent him home to pass his kidney stones.. which he finally did and is feeling all better now. Poor man is just miserable when he gets these things.
Long day today.. We even were on the evening news..Nancy's visit cut into my drawing time... just one more reason to find her visit here annoying.
Spent the morning with a few of our friends.. protesting Nancy Pelosi's fund raiser there. The people inside paid $3,000 each a plate... rich elitists... I guess she's so entrenched in her seat she doesn't need to campaign at home, but can spend her time here in Charleston raising money for only 1 of the democrats running for office here. So Spratt, Alvin Greene and Ben Frasier aren't worth her time... how does that make them feel I wonder?
The speaker is here for a fund raiser in conjunction with the NAACP... except the NAACP is ignoring the black Conservative candidates, and some black and minority Democrats too, the only person benefiting is Jim Clyburn, who already has millions in his campaign war chest... Something not quite right about that in my opinion.
Charleston won a best town for tennis award, the Tennis association presented a $10,000 check to the city of North Charleston to promote tennis in the city... maybe the tennis court near my house will get a net now, they painted the fence, repainted the courts... but alas no net. The basketball court is in similar shape, new paint, new lines now backstop or hoop... so how exactly are the kids supposed to play basketball on tennis around here?
Even kitty cats have bad hair days... our big cat Yetti hates to be brushed, but we're going to have to hold him down and do it the hard way... he is a mess.
The elegant Doberman is recognizable in silhouette. I have had a Doberman or two and have a soft spot in my heart for the breed. They are sweet gentle dogs and yet a fiercely loyal and protective dog... just the sight of these dogs is enough to deter most with bad intentions.
I've always liked Airedale terriers, they are very smart, handsome dogs. In England they used to be used as police dogs, doing tracking and guard work.
Spent the day doing laundry, how can two old people wear so many clothes? Fired up the grill and cooked enough chicken for 5 or six meals, we love grilled chicken salads, easy and quick when the chicken has been pre-cooked. Fresh sweet corn on the cob was really good tonight, I love fresh corn, won't be able to get it much longer I'm afraid. So that was my exciting day LOL.
Ron got tired of the Yamaha Moped... top speed of 30mph just wears you out eventually, so he found a Honda Helix on Craig's List and today we scooted all over town together.
We celebrated Tim Scott's birthday, with hot dogs chips and a bit of birthday cake. It was a fun gathering, I took tons of photos... now I'm exhausted.. so pictures later.
I loved the animated movie 'UP' that movie captured the dog's attention by saying 'SQUIRREL'! The squirrels in our yard taunt my dogs, they even throw nuts at the dogs... drives them crazy.
Keith and I have worked together on and off since I moved here in 1998. We are working together now, and have been for the last couple of years. He and his grandfather were very close, and he was planning to go to see him this afternoon, when he got the call that his grandfather had passed away. My condolences to Keith and his family.
My lantana stopped blooming during the really hot part of the summer, in the last week with the temps going down and some actual rain and some evening thunderstorms... it is again covered in blooms... and the blooms are covered in butterflies... which is why I LOVE lantana.
Great meeting tonight, with a grand finale with Lanneau's award. The 'Fire Pelosi' bus will be in Charleston this Friday... watch for pictures here Saturday at the very latest.
Agility dogs are amazingly well trained dogs, taking direction, climbing, jumping, weaving thru poles, going thru tunnels... but a surprising number don't want the fun to end on the pause table, and a battle of wills ensues... I tried to capture this standoff in today's journal page.
For my Mom and Dad it was Pearl Harbor Day... I can remember my Dad waking me up saying 'Get up, it's Pearl Harbor Day'...he wanted to remember, and he wanted his children to remember. In much the same way I want everyone to remember 9/11. I am sad that the wound is still so raw, would it be so raw still if the site wasn't still just 2 holes in the ground? Did the terrorists win? Have they broken our spirit? Is that why they think it is fitting to build the Cordoba Mosque at Ground Zero... would people be so upset about that if two shining towers stood today instead of nothing? I'm not a New Yorker, so I don't have a dog in this fight, and I do agree that the Imam has a legal right to build anything he wants, wherever he wants...it isn't his fault that the site is empty is it?

My super short week is over... I'm going to a seminar tomorrow and really looking forward to breakfast tomorrow morning with Senator Jim DeMint.
Summer came back with double barrels today, hot and humid... but we're having cool mornings so we can look forward to Fall coming soon.
I decided to break the rules today so I wore open toed shoes (a no no after Labor Day) and I'm still using my bright orange purse... I've decided to wear my sandals (which I LOVE) until my feet get cold... which will probably be some time in November LOL
Good food, good friends... and GREAT view of the marsh with cool ocean breezes... perfect way to spend the day.

We ate lunch at Applebees and tried the Asiago Peppercorn Steak... it was EXCELLENT, we'll definitely be having that again. After lunch we went to BestBuy to look at phones and ended up getting new phones... now I've gotta figure out how to use it...
The misty blue hills of the Blue ridge Mountains have always been a favorite of mine.... I do love Charleston and the Low Country.... but sometimes the mind turns to cool blue mountains... and in the Fall those hill are on fire with yellow and orange leaves.
Had blank sketchbook block tonight, so I drew my new scissors... and that silly Geico commercial with the piggy going 'whee whee whee'... made me think of that nursery rhyme... wonder if kids (or adults) know the whole thing anymore? Or that it was a ditty you say to babies while touching their toes.
I took Donn's advise and painted a snail similar to this one with the word SLOW in huge red letters and taped it to my computer... now when it's slow I have something to look at the makes me smile... great suggestion Donn.

Got a new computer at work, and it is twice as slow as my old one, I spent my entire day trying to figure out why it runs like a dog... didn't have much luck.
