Meeting tonight with Ron's high school friends, they're planning their 40th reunion for Labor Day weekend this coming September... so we'll be seeing these folks a lot this year.
The rural sketchers week nine item to draw from life, my keys... I find drawings like this very difficult, i lose my place and end up with a mess. I think I start in the wrong place, I may try this again... I'm getting excited about my trip to New Orleans in two weeks and hoping to get some time to draw while I'm attending meetings and workshops.

Up late watching to see who wins in Michigan... still too close to call. Karl Rove (a big Romney supporter) says Romney will win... I've still got my fingers crossed for Santorum to win, or at least get half the delegates.

Local talk radio host Joseph Kurt spoke to the Sea Island Republican Women tonight, he was inspiring talking about his mother and entertaining talking about politics.
Rain, rain, and more rain today, never hard, just steady all day long.

Ron went to the gun club with his brother this morning to shoot their WWII Garand rifles... this afternoon we had another hockey game that went well Rays won 3 to 1.. They go on a two week road trip now.
The Daniel Smith Spring Sale catalog had these fish in many colors as the picture associated with a set of transparent colors... I sorta copied it...used some of my transparent colors..fun.

Some days are like this, totally dawn till practically midnight on the move... no time to draw much of anything... so today's journal entry is mostly a recap of my day.

We drew and colored Spring flowers today, while it rained outside. Kids did great, one of the second graders had his birthday today so we drew birthday cakes, and happy birthday wishes for him on the white board. Practiced cursive writing on the white board as well... I was pleasantly surprised to find out they are learning cursive writing at this school... so at least some kids in the future will know how to read and write.

Grabbed my spray bottle to draw late tonight... I'm taking the Hillsdale College Constitution 101 class, and reading Aristotle, Cisero and Locke... my head is spinning. I need to finish the readings and then rewatch the lecture... I couldn't even come up with a question on this first weeks lesson... but I'll just have to work a little harder.

Kate Johnson blogged about self portraits today, I'm working up to it I guess... did my hand.. my fingers are not that stubby and short... my nails are short and stubby.
Blew out my jeans today, rats I hate having to throw clothes away, can't wear them with my under britches hanging out... too old for that I am.

I added a bit of burnt sienna to my raw sienna... but still it's too yellow... what do people use to paint sand... sand around here is almost gray near the water where it's wet, but almost white in the dune areas...  I'd love to know what paint colors others use for sand, or even for a beige dress or light tan.

Got my zines from Andrea Joseph today... How to draw like a loon and How to draw like a nut... little treasures of incredible tips and tricks and great drawings to study and drool over... and advise on pens and lettering...
Ron and I went to the gun show this morning... I don't believe I've seen so many people packed in that building in a very long time, we bought some primers and looked around a bit and Ron got me a fire starter flint... totally cool thing to have, I guess I wanted it after watching that Tom Hanks movie last week 'Cast Away' when he struggled so to try to light a fire... anyway, with this little gadget I can light a fire anytime, even in the rain, with no matches... so I'm feeling prepared for anything now...LOL

Beau's birthday, hard to believe our little dog is 14 years old... he still loves to play... I think that youthful spirit is an important part of staying young.
Had great fun with the kids today... the older kids are really improving in leaps and bounds now... the little ones are too... it is amazing to see their progress from week to week.

Ron and I had our last country fried pork chop and green bean lunch at Aunt Bea's today. She opened in North Charleston 10 years ago, and we've been customers from the beginning, for the last 5 years that I've been working in North Charleston we've eaten there every Thursday... tomorrow she is closing the doors and going out of business. I knew I'd done a drawing of her sign, and with a little searching I found it, back in September 2009.. so I printed that day out and pasted it into my journal for today... I was too sad to draw it today.

Another sign of Spring, a Carpenter Bee dead on the side walk at work, based on what I've read about them, this was a male... scouting around for a lady Carpenter Bee.

I'm over half way thru this sketchbook, I'm not that happy with this book, the two things that bother me the most is how dirty looking the cardboard cover looks, I carry my sketchbooks everywhere and draw in them daily, they don't live on a book shelf.  The hand*book journals have cloth covers that don't show dirt from use even when carried around for 3 or 4 months per book. My other issue is the lack of an elastic band to hold the book closed... I use two larger binder clips to hold it closed and to try to minimize the paper buckling.  On the positive side I love the paper in this journal, nice bright white, smooth and nice to draw on..   I use Fabriano watercolor paper so I know and love their paper.  I don't think I'll be buying any more of their sketchbooks though unless I see that they've made a couple of changes (in the cover and closure).

Robins, lots of robins and a few black birds descended on the lawn at our office... they all seemed to be having good luck getting worms and bugs... they are so beautiful and a sure sign that Spring is around the corner.

Got a flyer in the mail today for Tony Couch workshops. He's going to be in Gainesville Ga in July, and since my best girlfriend live in near Gainesville Ga and I'll be able to spend the week with her (an thus save having to spend money on a motel)... I'm signing up to attend.... so now I have to get his book back out and study up.

Today's Zentangle of the day was the only thing I could think of to draw today. Last month I signed up on the Zentangle.com website and get an email everyday, with a different pattern to try. It's fun to doodle the patterns and I am enjoying it. I've not actually done a 'tile' but I have done a couple of squares in a journal that I filled with some of the patterns I learned. It's a great thing to do in boring meetings or waiting rooms. .. and for days when nothing comes to mind to draw and the day is slipping away.... I believe this one is called OJO ...

Well this sorta worked, I drew the box first and tried to draw the negative spaces only (the red parts)... alas my box wasn't big enough or I drew one of the negative spaces too big which threw the entire thing off... it was and interesting exercise and it looks like a hockey player with the stick extended outside the box... otherwise maybe not.

Baby faces... on my mind today. I was very upset to find out Susan G. Komen had been using donations to fund Planned Parenthood. I would NEVER have given Susan G. Komen money had I known that was what they were doing. In future my donations will be to the American Cancer Society. People who support abortion are free to give Planned Parenthood money, I choose not to.

Weekend is winding down, I wrote down the high this morning... it actually made it to 78 today, in fact it is 78 right now... I heard that Denver is having a huge snow storm... I bet my brother who just moved to Alabama from Denver is glad he's in the balmy South now.

Lots of fun today with the kids, got home and my supplies for class next week arrived (a new brush for me tucked in there too... like I needed another brush). Got to work on my rose painting tonight, planning a strawberry painting... because of a tutorial I got today. No hockey this weekend, lots of laundry to do and a bit of painting too if I'm lucky.

Good thing I didn't cut myself in front of the kids huh? I put the band aid on too tight... turned my finger blue, had to cut that one off... then the blood really started gushing... so a loser band aid and I'm good to go now... Who knew art was dangerous?
